Senseless

Everyday no one is spared by reports about children killed by preventable diseases, natural calamities, traffic accidents, military and rebel operations and criminal elements who continue to roam the streets even after they were identified by witnesses as the main culprit.

Adults are supposed to take personal responsibility for their lives and the lives of those under their care, the children. Therefore, it follows that the concerned adults have to take most of the blame for whatever happens to these children. Adults should be blamed if they fail to take all the necessary precaution like immunizing their children, cleaning their surroundings, provide better environment, prevent them from playing in the streets, ensure that they have sufficient and safe area to play and avoid exposing them to dangerous and risky conditions.

But to lay the blame exclusively on the adults is to distort the state of the country's social development program. This country is a community and each and every person and institution should bear the responsibility of what is happening to the children. The government, in particular, should bear the bigger share of the blame because it is mandated to provide the system, structure, environment and resources needed to protect the rights of the child and ensure their full development.

Hence, the government employs public health personnel to implement laws relative to hygiene and sanitation, social workers to ensure that children are provided a safe place to develop and grow and police authorities to protect children from abuse and see to it that the perpetrators are severely punished.

Sad to say that the deaths and injuries that Filipino children suffers was a result of clear incompetence of the government and the personnel it hired for this purpose.

Greed for big-ticket projects (i.e. ZTE deal, overpriced rice imports, fertilizer scams, credit programs for the few) that takes children for granted is also the main reason on why many officials turned a blind eye and decided that the injuries and abuse our children suffer are a good price to pay to fatten their pockets.

"...the deaths and injuries that Filipino children suffers was a result of clear incompetence of the government and the personnel it hired for this purpose...".

Yeah, you are absolutely right. But at the end of the day, the government loses nothing. The hired personel loses nothing. The only people that have something to lose are the unfortunate kids and their poor parents. Health is something that's supposed to have priority number 1 in any situatuaion. I feel bad hearing stories like this...what a pity

  3. Thank you for the list. I am aware of some of these cases especially in Manila as my advocacy is on grief support. Parents or relatives contact me for support.

Children should never have to die before their parents and it's painful. Though I don't blog about some of them, I try to help them offline. I will blog this list one day. Thanks for sharing such a comprehensive list.

  4. No problem Noemi. I'm trying to update this list as often as I can. It's really sickening doing all of this, but its my way of reminding everyone about the horrors that these children had to go through.

  7. This is so true.
Parents are now being charged with child abuse if their child is overweight. Another said form of child neglect.
These innocent victims did not ask to be brought to this world.
It is our responsibility to pass down the Gift of life in which our parents passed down to us and to take even better care of it.

    Have a very nice day!

  8. If only the children we reach out to could always reach back (sometimes it seems their parents keep them to far away to get a good grip.)

  9. Hi Kirhat,

Indeed, our children are more and more ignored. With violence, pornography and many social ills surrounding them, they're vulnerable to fall prey to these hideous "maladies".

Parents may play a large part in protecting their children, but it could never be successful unless everybody concerned would cooperate and do his part.

  10. @ Jena Isle:

I couldn't agree with you more. Even major dailies are not putting more emphasis on child welfare unless a son or a daughter from a prominent family is involved. Most of the news about the children above were taken from tabloid articles because not enough information and media coverage were given to these defenseless segment of our population.

  12. This was such an eye-opening post. As parents we must be constantly vigilant. The world in general has changed and children have too often become the unwitting victims. Parents need to step up to their responsibilities and as a society we need to raise the awareness of the horrifying things children are suffering. Thank you for your heartfelt efforts.

  13. It seems like half the listings are from home fires. Parents really need to educate their children on what to do in case of a fire. And even post an escape as a reminder.

Another devastation is the earthquake in Haiti. Children will be without parents who were killed in the quake or will have to struggle to survive day to day. Visit my blog to read more and find out how to donate.

  14. When did children become a minor concern? It's sad, really. As one 112-year-old former pediatrician once said ... "Parenting has gone out of style." Not only good parenting, but the care and concern we should have for the innocent.
