WHO: Gay Men Should Reduce Their Partners To Avoid Monkeypox

Gay men should "for the moment" reduce partners and reconsider sleeping with new people in order to try to halt the global spread of monkeypox, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said last 27 July.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters at a press conference in Geneva that 98 percent of the more than 18,000 recent monkeypox cases reported to the agency had been among men who sleep with other men. He urged members of this community to take steps to protect themselves amid the public health emergency.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), anyone can get monkeypox> However, in the latest outbreak, the virus is predominantly spreading among gay and bisexual men. Officials noted last 25 July that most of the people affected reported some level of sexual activity.

Prolonged skin-to-skin contact is one of the major ways monkeypox is spreading. This includes sexually abhorrent acts like anal sex, which the gays are fond of doing.

As New York City's health department are slow in dealing with now more than 1,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox, city leaders are calling on the World Health Organization (WHO) to immediately rename the monkeypox virus.

In a letter to WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Gehebreyesus, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan wrote that while the Big Apple remains concerned about rapidly increasing transmission and limited access to testing resources and vaccine supply, it has a "growing concern" for stigmatizing and "potentially devastating" impacts the messaging around monkeypox can have on vulnerable communities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has now confirmed nearly 100 cases of monkeypox in over a dozen countries, with the largest number in the UK. Most of the cases so far are among gay and bisexual men.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported the first case in the current outbreak on 7 May in a man who had recently travelled to Nigeria, where monkeypox is endemic. This was soon followed by two additional cases who share a household and four cases among gay and bisexual men, all of whom appear to have contracted the virus locally. As of 23 May, UKHSA has reported 70 confirmed cases in England and one in Scotland.

The number of new monkeypox cases was observed to have risen rapidly in the United States and more than 50 other countries, Florida's case count alone is surgingto 73 as of 7 July, the third most of any state, after California and New York, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were 700 confirmed U.S. cases, the CDC said.

Most Americans diagnosed with monkeypox are middle-aged, with more than 70 petrcent of cases occurring in people between the ages of 35 and 54, according to the Health Department. They usually acquired the disease in the country, as opposed to coming here from elsewhere with the virus, according to the department’s disease repository.

In early 2021, Portugal’s health care system was on the verge of collapse. Hospitals in the capital, Lisbon, were overflowing and authorities were asking people to treat themselves at home. In the last week of January, nearly 2,000 people died as the virus spread.

The country’s vaccine program was in a shambles, so the government turned to Vice Adm. Henrique Gouveia e Melo, a former submarine squadron commander, to right the ship.

Last 24 August 2021, US Vice President Kamala Harris delayed for several hours a trip to Vietnam after the US embassy in Hanoi reported a possible case involving "acoustic incidents" there, raising concern she could be a target.

Tens of thousands of Pakistanis are thronging coronavirus vaccination centers daily after officials announced penalties for the unvaccinated, including blocked cell phones and barred access to offices, restaurants, shopping malls and transport.

Queues for inoculations stretched more than a kilometer in some locations this week, in response to measures designed to help slow a Delta variant-fuelled surge in infections that has put pressure on Pakistan's poor health infrastructure.

There were some "breakthrough" infections that are happening to vaccinated people, but the rising tide of cases and hospitalizations is mainly a threat to those who are not vaccinated. In some parts of the country, most people aren't vaccinated — so the virus can still do some serious damage.

Study Finds That Protesters Who Doesn't Follow Social-Distancing Have Psychopathic Personality Traits

Several reports in the last couple of days showed that protesters in the United States are ignoring the social-distancing rule and it left many health workers astounded. A new study on the psychology of pandemic behaviors could answer questions about what motivated these selfish behaviors.

The study, a peer-reviewed pre-print that will soon be published in the journal Social Psychology and Personality Science, asked 502 people to answer questions online about how often they followed coronavirus pandemic health guidelines, if they planned to follow guidelines going forward, and what they'd do if they were diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Philippines Extends Enhanced Quarantine In The Capital

Last 12 May, Philippines announced an extension of a lockdown of its capital, Manila, to 11 weeks, stretching one of the world's strictest and longest community quarantines to June to try to contain coronavirus outbreaks.

That would buck a global trend of easing lockdowns as countries try to strike a balance between containment and restoring some normalcy to limit economic damage.

Tesla is offering to pay for and ship a crucial medical component being used in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

CEO Elon Musk announced last 31 March: "We have extra FDA-approved ventilators. Will ship to hospitals worldwide within Tesla delivery regions. Device & shipping cost are free. Only requirement is that the vents are needed immediately for patients, not stored in a warehouse."

Italy Has Record High Deaths In A Single Day From COVID-19

It was recently reported by Business Insider that Italy has 793 coronavirus-related deaths in just 24 hours last 21 March 2020, the largest single-day death toll so far reported in any country since the outbreak started.

The number tops a record death toll Italy set just a day earlier, when the country reported 627 deaths in a day related to COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Federal prosecutors in California have launched a criminal investigation into popular e-cigarette maker Juul Labs, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California is conducting the probe, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The focus of the investigation was not immediately apparent.

The world's largest retailer was sued for allegedly engaging in deceptive marketing practices surrounding its homeopathic products.

Nonprofit educational organization Center for Inquiry (CFI) filed a lawsuit against Walmart last May, alleging that the retail chain "uses marketing, labeling, and product placement to falsely present homeopathic products as equivalent alternatives to science-based medicines, and to represent homeopathic products as effective treatments for specific diseases and symptoms."

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a proclamation last 30 November to commemorate World AIDS Day — and didn’t mention the biggest contributor for the spread of the diseases: the LGBT community.

"Today, on World AIDS Day, we honor those who have lost their lives to AIDS, we celebrate the remarkable progress we have made in combating this disease, and we reaffirm our ongoing commitment to end AIDS as a public health threat," Trump said in the statement, which was signed and released online.

Bleaches and Cleaning Products May Be Harmful

A new research suggests that using too much bleach may increase the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a serious and often deadly lung condition.

A recent study found that nurses who used disinfectants to clean surfaces at least once a week had a 24-percent to 32-percent increased risk of developing COPD over the course of eight years compared to nurses who used these products less frequently. This link remained even after researchers made adjustments for other COPD risk factors such as age, smoking status, body mass index, and ethnicity.
