According to Numbeo, the largest database of user-contributed data about cities and countries worldwide, Davao City placed second in the list of top 10 Asian cities with lowest crime rate. Topping the list was Singapore while Valenzuela ranked third.
Report from Jess Diaz of Philippine Star also cited the index for both cities. With zero as "very low" and 100 as "very high," Davao’s crime index was 17.93, while Valenzuela received a 28.32 rating. Singapore was rated at 17.36.
In terms of safety, Singapore received a rating of 82.64, Davao 82.07 and Valenzuela 71.68.
Valenzuela City Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian credited the city government and the local police for the feat.
The city hogged the headlines recently due to a factory fire that killed more than 70 workers.
The other safe cities in Asia are Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, all in Thailand; Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei; Vientiane in Laos; Yangon in Myanmar, and Phnom Penh in Cambodia.
