Van Epps, a former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services, defeated Democratic state Representative Aftyn Behn, outlets including the Associated Press and NBC News announced. Portugal’s caretaker government is planning to expel some 18,000 foreigners living in the country without authorization, a minister said last 3 May in the buildup to a national election.

Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro said the center-right government will issue approximately 18,000 notifications to people in the country illegally to leave. The minister said officials will begin next week by asking some 4,500 foreigners to leave voluntarily within 20 days.

Social media giant Meta has taken some bold steps by blocking WhatsApp accounts involved in "a small cluster of likely social engineering activity" on the service.

In its recent report, they disclosed that it traced the activity to APT42 (also called UNC788 and Mint Sandstorm), which the FBI previously linked to a phishing campaign that targeted members of the Trump and Harris camps. The company said that the suspicious activity on WhatsApp "attempted to target individuals in Israel, Palestine, Iran, the United States and the UK." It also seemed to have focused on political and diplomatic officials, which included people associated with both presidential candidates.

Social media giant Facebook is looking to create a standalone advisory committee for election-related policy decisions, according to a new report from The New York Times. The company has reportedly approached a number of policy experts and academics it is interested in recruiting for the group, which could give the company cover for some of its most consequential choices.

The group, which the Times characterizes as a commission, would potentially be empowered to weigh in on issues like election misinformation and political advertising — two of Facebook's biggest policy headaches.
