AfD Gaining Ground In Germany's Election Polls

There is only a few weeks before Germany's general election and a poll has found support for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) falling sharply while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) saw significant gains.

According to YouGov poll last 29 January, the SPD has dropped by 4 points to 15 percent compared to last week.

No More Deportation Protection For Venezuelans

President Donald Trump's administration has revoked a recent Joe Biden-era extension of temporary deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans in the United States, according to an unpublished Department of Homeland Security document the Miami Herald has obtained.

During an interview with the Fox News program Fox and Friends last 29 January, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that she has rescinded an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status for Venezuela that President Joe Biden made days before leaving the White House. That extension had been announced by Biden’s Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas.

After American Elections, Elon Musk Sets Sight On Germany

Political power mover and tech billionaire Elon Musk made a surprise address at the campaign launch for Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Musk, who spoke to the crowd in a live video, was met with huge cheers by the roughly 4,500 AfD supporters gathered inside a hall in the eastern German city of Halle last 25 January.

While speaking with party leader Alice Weidel, AfD’s candidate for chancellor, Musk reiterated his belief that AfD is Germany’s "best hope" in the upcoming general election on 23 February.

China Harassed Vessels At The West Philippine Sea

Last 25 January, the Philippines suspended a scientific survey in the West Philippine Sea after two of its fisheries vessels faced "harassment" and aggressive behaviour from China's coast guard and navy.

Manila and Beijing have had a series of escalating confrontations in disputed waters of the South China Sea. China claims almost all the strategic waterway - through which US$ 3 trillion in commerce moves annually - overlapping sovereignty claims by the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.
